Divorce focus: Your next chapter mandates a forward-looking strategy

“[K]eep looking forward rather than in the rearview mirror.”

Although that little kernel of decidedly generic advice is relatively buried in the text of a recent family law article written by divorce columnist Heather Locus for Forbes, it still stands tall as a strategy admonition.

In fact, it reasonably seems to serve quite well as a guiding mantra for any New Jersey resident who is otherwise preoccupied with the many and complex aspects of divorce.

That’s Locus’ point: The divorce process can quickly overwhelm, and it is critically important for a negotiating soon-to-be ex to remain grounded and as dispassionate as possible throughout the ordeal.

That “ordeal” tag could be a misnomer, of course, since divorce isn’t akin to pulling teeth for every separating couple. Locus does make the valid point, though, that it typically entails “a series of decisions” ranging from financial considerations and child-centric concerns to post-divorce family realities and other matters that are often cumulatively stressful.

Locus’ piece chronicling how to deal with all that centrally stresses the vital role that an experienced attorney can play in keeping a client duly focused and in a forward-thinking mindset. She notes that a so-called “empowerment team” should be led by “an attorney who specializes in family law.”

Here is why that it true. Proven legal counsel can provide key input on relevant laws, processes, deadlines, documentation and more. Moreover, an established divorce lawyer can help a divorcing individual truly distinguish between wants and fundamental needs in the divorce process. A seasoned legal advocate can also make appropriate referrals to other professionals if needed (such as an accountant, tax specialist and/or child therapist).

The key for a divorcing spouse is to steadfastly maintain that forward-looking perspective. A tried-and-tested family law attorney can help to promote that goal.
