Singer Kelly Clarkson files for divorce

On Behalf of | Jun 15, 2020 | Divorce

Another celebrity couple has decided to end their marriage. Most New Jersey residents are more than likely familiar with popular singer Kelly Clarkson. The Season 1 winner of “American Idol,” she recently filed for divorce from her husband of seven years — Brandon Blackstock. Clarkson filed divorce papers on June 4 under her married name, Kelly Blackstock.

Clarkson is also the host of her own talk show as well as a judge on the TV program, “The Voice.” The couple shares a 5-year-old daughter and a 2-year-old son. Irreconcilable differences was cited as the reason for the divorce. Clarkson also asked that she not have to pay her soon-to-be former husband spousal support. Clarkson filed papers in Los Angeles.

A prenuptial agreement apparently exists between the couple. Blackstock is a talent manager and the son of Clarkson’s former manager. He was married once before and has two children from his previous marriage. Clarkson has asked that her legal name be restored to Clarkson.

Celebrities or not, divorce has the potential to affect all couples. When a couple decides their marriage is no longer viable, each person would do well to seek independent legal advice from an experienced New Jersey attorney who may be able to best explain what the divorce process entails and what a client could expect along the way. Divorce is never an easy road to travel even in the best of circumstances and it’s important when each spouse has some idea of the legalities involved in order to navigate that process.
